Hypospadias - Types, Symptoms and Causes

Hypospadias - Types, Symptoms, and Causes

Hypospadias is a congenital condition in which the opening of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body, is located on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip. This condition can vary in severity and may require surgical correction. Here's some information about the types, symptoms, and causes of hypospadias:

Types of Hypospadias:

Distal Hypospadias: The urethral opening is located near the tip of the penis.
Midshaft Hypospadias: The urethral opening is in the middle of the shaft of the penis.
Proximal Hypospadias: The urethral opening is closer to the base of the penis, near the scrotum or perineum.

Symptoms of Hypospadias:
The primary symptom of hypospadias is the abnormal placement of the urethral opening. Other associated symptoms may include:

A downward curve of the penis (chordee)
Abnormal spraying or stream of urine
Difficulty in aiming the urine stream
Excessive spraying or splashing of urine
In severe cases, the foreskin may also be affected and appear hooded or incomplete.

Causes of Hypospadias:
The exact cause of hypospadias is often unknown. However, there are several factors that may contribute to its development:

Genetic Factors: Certain genetic conditions, such as Klinefelter syndrome or disorders involving the sex chromosomes, may increase the risk of hypospadias.
Hormonal Factors: Imbalances in hormone levels during fetal development may affect the formation of the urethra and lead to hypospadias.
Environmental Factors: Exposure to certain environmental factors during pregnancy, such as maternal use of tobacco, alcohol, or certain medications, may increase the risk of hypospadias.
It's important to note that hypospadias is a congenital condition and is present at birth. If you suspect your child may have hypospadias or notice any abnormalities in the positioning of the urethral opening, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and guidance on treatment options.
